Health reviews medicines and poisons scheduling
In January 2013, the Minister for Health and Ageing, Tanya Plibersek, appointed an independent panel to review the scheduling regime for medicines and poisons. Former APVMA CEO, Eva Bennet-Jenkins, has been appointed to chair this panel.
The review will have particular regard to amendments made by Parliament in 2009 to Part 6-3 of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 and will report on:
- the system of access controls for goods containing scheduled substances
- the outcomes of the administration of scheduled substances by the secretary (of the Department of Health and Ageing) and by the associated committees
- the effect of the amendments on the therapeutic goods industry and on individual parties within the industry
- whether there are adequate avenues for review of decisions made by the secretary.
The review may also make recommendations for further changes to the scheduling regime.
Public submissions to the review are invited, with the consultation period commencing Tuesday, 2 April and concluding 5 pm Monday 29 April 2013. The panel may also hold forums with stakeholders to clarify various issues raised in submissions.
The review is expected to be completed by 30 August 2013.
Further information is available from the Department of Health and Ageing's website.
