Work-in-progress is an indicator of the future workload of the APVMA. It is calculated as the number of applications still in evaluation at the end of the reporting period.
Significant efforts were made in 2014–15 to complete the transition of applications from the old legislation to the new, resulting in the APVMA starting 2015–16 with a low amount of work-in-progress (see below figure). This was achieved by staff contributing extra effort to the task.
The APVMA continues to focus on the reduction of overdue applications as a priority for the organisation and our stakeholders, as shown in the figure below. This focus resulted in a 9.6 per cent reduction in the number of product applications in progress and an 18 per cent reduction in the number of permit applications in progress over the last quarter. However, the number of active applications still in progress increased by 27 per cent as a consequence of activities in our vet actives program.

At 30 June 2016, there were 1192 applications including 724 product applications, 289 active applications and 179 permit applications in progress (see below figure). Of the applications still in progress, 79 per cent are still within their allocated assessment period.
