Joint operation involving APVMA seizes illegal medicines
Counterfeit and illicit medicines have been seized in an crackdown involving the Australian Border Force (ABF), Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the APVMA.
The international crackdown was part of Operation Pangea, a global operation led by INTERPOL in cooperation with the World Customs Organization.
Between 12-19 September, ABF officers working in international mail facilities around Australia detected and seized 48 consignments of counterfeit and illicit medicines.
APVMA makes important contribution to international regulatory science
Our Chief Scientist has released a blog post discussing new findings on the common analytical method used to determine chemical composition of agricultural and veterinary chemicals known as high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV).
Scientists from our Chemistry and Manufacture section observed factors concerning the sensitivity and robustness of the HPLC-UV analytical method leading to better data interpretation of active constituent characteristics in some circumstances.
The team presented their observation to top Australian and international scientists at the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) National Centenary Conference in Melbourne, and are hopeful their findings will be incorporated into international guidelines across our agvet regulatory scientific work.
Reminder—open for public consultation
We regularly seek input throughout chemical registration and review processes, and other operational and regulatory processes. We are currently seeking input on these open consultations:
- Proposed registration of Broadband OD Insecticide containing the new active constituent, Beauveria bassiana strain PPRI 5339 - 3 October 2017
- Seeking industry comment on the APVMA model evaluation framework - 3 October 2017
- Proposal to amend Schedule 20 of the revised Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code - 3 October 2017
