APVMA celebrates 25 years of agvet chemical regulation in Australia

15 June 2018

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) celebrates its 25th anniversary today. Originally established in 1993 as the National Registration Authority (NRA), the APVMA has a proud history of scientific expertise and innovation as a national regulator of agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemicals in Australia.

APVMA Chief Executive Officer Dr Chris Parker said the agency's history as a regulator shows a track record of achievement and 25 years of productive collaboration with other Australian and international regulators.

Our international collaborations have produced solid results for Australian industry, such as the first approval of a new active constituent in 2007 through a joint review with the United States and Canada, and the first ever trilateral review of a veterinary medicine (Metacam for use on sheep) in 2016," Dr Parker said.

Our regulation has responded to the demands of a changing climate, new technology and shifting industry practice to keep people and animals safe and support productive agricultural industries.

Just last month, Australian farmers became the first in the world to gain access to new agvet chemical technologies with the approval of afidopyropen and Duddingtonia flagrans – thanks to the efforts of the APVMA.

We have fostered solid working relationships with industry peak bodies, including CropLife, Animal Medicines Australia, National Farmers Federation, Veterinary Manufacturers and Distributors Association, Cotton Australia, AusVeg, and GrainGrowers.

Most importantly, the APVMA has worked with industry these past 25 years to ensure the agvet chemicals they bring to market are safe and effective. We have provided regulatory services for the supply of thousands agvet chemical products in Australia, and our timeframe performance has steadily improved.

The APVMA is a small agency with an important purpose. No matter where we are based or the challenges we face, our focus is on doing the best job we can for the benefit of all Australians.”
