In September 1997, the APVMA (then NRA) began a special review of veterinary products containing strychnine (Gastric Stimulant Powders and Vita-Plast Powder 650 gram for Horses). The review was based on toxicological, residue and occupational health and safety concerns.

The APVMA advised registrants of the review and requested more information to show that the products would not pose a potential risk to human health. Neither of the two registrants was prepared to provide data for this review, as they had both decided not to continue with the product registrations. The registrations of the products were not renewed in 30 June 1998; the sale of existing stocks was permitted until 30 June 2000.

The review lapsed because the registrations of the products under review were cancelled before the review was completed.

The APVMA will not register any new veterinary products containing strychnine unless it is satisfied that all concerns identified in the nomination phase of the review have been fully addressed.
