Fenitrothion active constituents, chemical products and labels were nominated for review in response to an invitation to the public by the APVMA (then the NRA) on 1 November 1994. Eighty of the nominated chemicals, including fenitrothion, were included in the priority candidate review list published in the Gazette on 2 May 1995.

The scope of the review includes reconsideration of fenitrothion active constituents, chemical products and labels through assessments related to toxicology, work health and safety, chemistry, residues and environment.

The work plan was first published on 1 July 2015.

The s 32 notice of reconsideration for active constituents, chemical products and labels for fenitrothion was published in the Gazette on 3 December 1996.

The s 32 notice of reconsideration was given to holders and chemical coordinators of the states and territories on commencement of the review on 19 July 1996. 

Additional s 32 notices were sent to holders on 1 July 2015 and 7 March 2024 to include all approved actives and registered products in the review. 

Section 33 notices to request additional chemistry information were sent to holders on 31 August 2023. 

A further s 33 notice to request additional chemistry information was sent to a holder on 22 January 2024.

In 1999, the APVMA (then known as the NRA) released a fenitrothion interim review report, which summarised the outcomes of the interim chemistry and agricultural, toxicological, occupational health and safety, environmental and residues assessment reports. The APVMA took interim action in 2000–01 to reduce the risks associated with use of fenitrothion products.

In March 2004, the APVMA released the fenitrothion draft review report.

The APVMA published the draft Review Technical Report in April 2024.

The APVMA published the proposed regulatory decision for the fenitrothion reconsideration in an APVMA Special Gazette on 9 April 2024.

A 3 month public consultation was held for the proposed regulatory decision from 9 April 2024 through to 8 July 2024.
