Proposal to use New Zealand registration for Australian companion animal veterinary chemicals

This consultation closed on 4 November 2016

Consultation period

19 September 2016 to 4 November 2016

We are inviting submissions from industry regarding the introduction of a process that allows us to register veterinary chemicals in Australia by leveraging assessments and decisions made in New Zealand (NZ) for non-food producing animals.

A discussion paper on the proposal is available for industry to contribute their feedback.

The paper includes:

  • the current NZ approach to registering veterinary chemicals for non-food producing animals
  • information on the issues and challenges regarding the use of NZ assessments
  • the activities that will be required to support any implementation of a ‘registration by reference’ process.

The concept would still require the APVMA to assess applications against Australian statutory criteria—however, relevant assessment reports and registration decisions from NZ may be useful as a ‘reference’ for our decision-making when registering veterinary chemicals for non-food producing animals.

If you would like to contribute your feedback—the consultation will be open from 19 September to 4 November 2016.
