In December 1996 the APVMA (then known as the NRA) announced that demeton-S-methyl was nominated for review as part of the second cycle of the then Existing Chemicals Review Program. Concerns about the use of demeton-S-methyl related to possible risks to public health, occupational health and safety, and the environment.
At the time there was only one registered product containing demeton-S-methyl—Metasystox (i) Systemic Insecticide. In June 1998 the registrant advised the APVMA that they were phasing out the product and requested that the APVMA cancel the registration of the product.

Phase status: Completed
In June 1998 the APVMA cancelled the registration of demeton-S-methyl and set a period of two years from 30 June 1998 for remaining stocks of the product to be sold. The APVMA withdrew the maximum residue limit for demeton-S-methyl on January 2001.
The APVMA did not continue with the review as there were no longer any registered products on the market nor maximum residue limits for demeton-S-methyl.
The APVMA will not register any new products for demeton-S-methyl in the future unless it is satisfied that all concerns identified in the nomination phase for demeton-S-methyl have been fully addressed.
There are currently no products containing demeton-S-methyl registered for use in Australia.
