In addition to the standard labelling requirements, labels for intramammary preparations for the treatment of bovine mastitis should include the following information, where applicable.

2. Product name

The label should clearly state, as part of the product name, that the product is for ‘lactating cows’ or ‘dry cows’.

4. Statement of claims for use

The claims statements should clearly state that the product is for ‘lactating cows’ or ‘dry cows’.

6.1. Restraints

A restraint statement is required for all ‘dry cow’ products. The following restraint statement should appear on all ‘dry cow’ product labels to indicate the minimum number of days of dry period required.

DO NOT USE in lactating cows or within […] days of calving.

Unless residue analysis to the contrary is provided, the label should have a statement to cover inadvertent use of dry cow therapy in lactating animals or before calving. For example:

If [product] is accidentally administered to a lactating animal or within […] days of calving, contact the [product distributor/prescribing veterinarian] for advice.

6.5. Dosage and administration

The directions should clearly state that the product is formulated for use as a dry cow or lactating cow therapy.

6.5.1. General

The label should include, where applicable, directions for the following for all intramammary preparations:

  • Administration of the product, including instructions on milking out, or not milking out, the udder before administration.
  • Disinfection of the teat.
  • Sanitary handling of the product (the wording may vary depending on the type of container).
  • Teat dipping or spraying after administration.

6.5.2. Dry cow preparations

Dry cow preparations should also include instructions on the following:

  • Time for treatment (i.e. immediately after the last milking of the season).
  • Massaging of teat and udder during administration (if applicable).
  • Post-treatment precautions.

6.5.3. Lactating cow preparations

Lactating cow preparations should also include instructions on the following:

  • The optimal treatment regime (that is, the number of treatments).
  • The interval required between treatments.
  • Massaging of teat and/or quarter after administration.
