In 2002 the APVMA received an adverse experience report concerning the use of a coumaphos-based product in a domestic setting.

The APVMA investigated the report and found that the product concerned, Bay-O-Pet Asuntol Dog and Horse Rinse containing 50 grams per litre of coumaphos, had been used in a manner contrary to label directions (that is, off-label use).

A key issue that emerged from the investigation was the overall lack of toxicological and exposure data regarding domestic use on companion animals of 50 grams per litre coumaphos products.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (within the then Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing) advised the APVMA and the registrant that coumaphos-based products were unsuitable for home veterinary use and recommended against their registration.

The APVMA requested more information from the registrant to show that the product would not be an undue risk to human health. The registrant did not provide this information but rather requested that the APVMA cancel the registration of the product.
